Women veterans are the fastest-growing segment of the VA system and have access to dedicated Women Veterans Program Managers at every VA medical center. The VA covers gender-specific primary care, maternity care, mental health (including military sexual trauma counseling, free regardless of discharge status), and the Women Veterans Call Center (1-855-VA-WOMEN). The VA Crisis Line (dial 988, press 1) is staffed 24/7. Disability compensation, GI Bill education benefits, VA home loans, and Vocational Rehabilitation are processed through regional VA offices, and state Veterans Service Organizations (American Legion, VFW, DAV) help file claims for free. Vet Centers provide free readjustment counseling outside the main VA system — useful for women veterans who prefer a smaller setting or are not yet enrolled in VA healthcare. U.S. VETS at Kalaeloa (the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station) operates one of Hawaii's largest residential programs for homeless and at-risk veterans, with dedicated women's housing and family units. The American Legion Department of Hawaii on McCully Street in Honolulu fields service officers who help with VA claims and runs posts on every island that host networking and community events.
